In this unique concert, Burak Savas and Laia Escartin unite Turkish and Catalan/Iberian songs from their childhoods, exploring the connections between these distant yet Mediterranean traditions. What commonalities emerge in melodies born 3,000 km apart, shaped by the same sea and cultural exchanges?
Burak Savas, a master of Ottoman Classical Music, is a skilled singer and instrumentalist, playing the violin, tanbur, lavta, and more. Laia Escartin, a singer and violist, has developed a unique style influenced by her Iberian roots. Burak is also Laia’s teacher, making this collaboration a fusion of their musical journeys.
The jam session after the concert will open a space to create bridges between Mediterranean cultures.
World Sessions: a series of ten unique concerts exploring different World Music genres.
Each session, we pair young talent and well-known names from the scene, challenging them to create a special performance for the evening. Following the concert, there will be a jam session providing other musicians the opportunity to showcase their skills on stage and network in the World Music scene.
World Sessions is led by Daan Arets and organized by Stichting GloMAD with support from Lab Grounds, Gemeente Rotterdam, Stichting Volkskracht and Popunie.
