BaBa ZuLa, the eccentric grandmasters of 21st-century Turkish psychedelic music, will thrill you with their experimental and spiritual blend of rock, folk and dub. At Grounds, they open the doors of their temple to take us, their followers, into higher realms during a quirky and improvised ritual.
Their story begins in 1996 in Istanbul, where the five band members start making music like true do-it-yourselfers with everyday objects such as spoons, machines and toys. Add to that traditional Oriental instruments like a darbuka or electric saz and the more modern Turkish drum machine, and you get BaBa ZuLa’s special sound, which they themselves call Istanbul Psychedelia.
Live, this results in an overwhelming and unique experience, as no show is the same as the previous one. An eclectic all-encompassing spectacle where they seamlessly blend different art disciplines. Beautiful costumes, belly dancers, poetry and a theatrical setting ensure that the audience is drawn into a tantalising audiovisual feast.
With their music, BaBa ZuLa bridges the present and the past. The conventional and the exotic. And the East and the West. So if the Bosphorus Bridge is ever in need of renewal, BaBa ZuLa will step in. Come and be immersed in their wonderful universe.
